Understanding workplaces

Learn what a workplace is, what a primary workplace means, and how workplaces are managed in Salaris.

Updated over 2 months ago

Workplaces are important because they determine how state and local taxes are handled for employees. Salaris automatically creates and assigns workplaces based on your SocialSchedules locations, so there’s no setup required.

What is a workplace?

A workplace is the physical location where an employee or contractor performs their job duties. Correctly assigning a workplace ensures compliance with:

State and local income tax withholding

Employer state and local tax obligations

State unemployment tax

Local employment tax requirements

Employees (and contractors) can be associated with multiple workplaces, representing the different locations they perform work at.

Primary workplace

Every employee must have a primary workplace defined to ensure payroll taxes are calculated correctly. Employees without a primary workplace assigned cannot be paid via Salaris.
